How to get started flying FPV.

I’m not going to get into all the different frequencies and why one is better than the other, but I will offer this bit of advice. Generally speaking, lower frequencies have a longer reach and can penetrate through objects better than higher frequencies. You can increase the distance or range with better antennae, but that in itself is a whole separate topic.

Here are the things you’ll need:

  1. Video Transmitter (VTX)
  2. Video Receiver (VRX)
  3. Camera
  4. Display device (goggles or a LCD screen)
  5. Batteries
  6. Cables

There are a ton of optional accessories you can get into to make your flying safer and more fun, but one thing you might find necessary is an Onscreen Display (OSD). OSD will give you information about altitude, direction, flight time battery life and more. Because if you’re not careful, you’re up, up and away and before you know it, you’re out of juice and you’re a mile from home.

Hobby King offers a good starter setupĀ  with items 1, 2, and 6 from the list above for about $55. It’s a Boscam 5.8 hz 200 watt setup.

Here’s the link:

Add this display for about $95:

There are other displays out there that are less expensive. Really it’s just your typical headrest-type display for playing DVDs in your car, so anything that fits that bill will work.

Finally, add the camera. This one from HK goes for about $17.

When you select the camera, make sure it matches the transmission standard for your LCD, either NTSC (USA) or PAL (Europe).

This is the setup I started out with. So for about $170 plus shipping you can sit in the pilot’s seat. If after you experience it, you find that you like it, you can start getting in ot more sophisticated equipment. See the post on The Expensive route.
