B17 bomber special
« on: November 09, 2015, 10:59:00 AM »
I just ordered The Horizon Hobby UMX B-17G Flying Fortress BNF  micro plane. It's on sale with a AMA code from $100 down to $70. SO a $30 savings of which $10 goes to the AMA.

If you have a DSM transmitter, it's not much money to have some fun with. Yay bind and fly.

Heh, I've never actually flown a plane. So it might be a real short video.  :b0206:

make sure there is a lot of VERY tall grass ALL around you ,like a wheat field .
It will give you a good padded area to keep damage to a minimum .

I think you will do just fine . :t2030:

But just in case .......vids ........vids

Well it's been over a year. My first flight was not good. the plane climbs very quickly, but then stalls. Keeping the nose down is a full time job. In any case, predictably it climbed, stalled and wheeled over to the right, dove down and hit a fence. Seemed to be OK and I later got it off the ground again and somewhat landed it, but eventually noticed that I had knocked off the end of the wing. So now it was somewhat unbalanced.

I collected the piece of wing and went home and tried to glue the wing tip back on. That didn't really work that well and eventually I lost the wing tip, somehow. Seems like it must be somewhere in my basement but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Time goes by and I see a spare parts sale at Horizon Hobby and I bought a whole new main wing.

Fast forward to this week and I finally have the time to attempt to replace the old wing with a brand new one.

I'm a helicopter guy. I've never worked on foam. The B17 is a smallish (12" to 15") foam plane. I THOUGHT the wing was held on with clear tape. I was wrong. It was glued. I had to destroy the old wing to get it off and to extricate the motors and aileron servos. But I did it.

Now it's time to put it back together and I have a problem. None of the glues I have for helicopters seem appropriate for this model. It SEEMS like the original glue was a soft rubbery glue that dries white in color. What is that stuff? Where do I get some?

There are a number of glues that will work fine for you

1 - foam safe c a ...    Best method for an instant bond , hard to remove
2 - elmers white glue or generic white school glue ...    longer working and cure time , fairly easy to remove
3 - 2 part epoxies with a cure time from 5 to 15 minutes no more than that is needed ...   medium working time and cure time  , a little harder to remove
4- hot glue ...   Medium working time and a slightly less working time , fairly easy to remove

These are the most common types that are known for foam without damaging or melting the foam and are readily available anywhere

Thanks Tim. I actually didn't think of using Elmers glue. Seems obvious in retrospect.
